Absolutely Fantastic - Large Yoga Mat Review

You won't be disappointed. This mat is a ridiculous rip off! We contacted the company to see why this was and they simply told us that the mat needed 6 months to be "broken in". In my opinion, you shouldn't have to put up with slipping and sliding for on a mat even if it is a new one.

If I had a longer commute to my yoga class, I would have probably gotten the Pro-Lite which is 3 pounds lighter and just an inch shorter on the side. The best part, my feet and knees are very happy! She has been using hers for over 2 years and it still looks like new. It took a few weeks for the coating (makes it a little slippery at first) and the scent to dissipate, but after the initial break-in period, this mat has stood up to lots of wear.

It does grip the floor, but I actually thought about ditching the mat and practicing directly on the wood floor, because it seemed like a much better option than this slippery mat. My instructor even pointed out the problems after class, and was surprised to learn that it is a Manduka mat. I put my knees into it all the time and it feels just fine. The mat is rolled out over vinyl flooring, so the mat is all the cushion I have.

So, when Christmas came around I knew exactly what she would like- a yoga mat. I looked on Amazon and this mat seemed to have the best of everything- it's thick, long, and had great reviews.

Please understand that I'm comparing this to a garbage Embark mat from Target. That mat had me slipping and resulted in extra pressure in my hands and knees during certain poses. To me, it's the perfect balance between firmness and support. At 71" long, it is slightly longer than your average mat, great for taller people, who tend to spill over on smaller mats.

Hanging over the shower bar works nicely. When you first unroll your mat you will find one end to be a bit curled.

The recommendation of Manduka is to buy one of their towels to rest on the mat, but my yoga instructor tells me that the towels shift and move when hopping into uttanasana from high chaturanga, a very common vinyasa transition. That's a lot of trouble and uncertainty for now investing close to $130 into mats and towels. It was expensive than other mats but I think I made the wise choice to buy this one. It is long enough and thick enough.

While I also agree that for the money it would be nice to have a mat with great traction it is still a five star purchase because of the cushioning. I have had knee problems for a long time and this is the only mat I have found that allows me to do asanas such as pigeon pose with comfort. This is such a solid piece of investment when it comes to practicing yoga at home. I can't even use my old flimsy yoga mats after being spoiled on this one.

Great Until It Broke - Hugger Mugger Yoga Mat Review

This mat is heavier than most, but it truly makes a difference. Manduka BlackMatPRO 71-Inch Yoga and Pilates Mat Simple and sweet, it's worth the money.

It goes great with QUICK FIX PILATES and QUICK FIX POWER YOGA! I'm so excited, that I just can't hide it, I'm about to lose control but I think I like it.

I just finished doing Shaun T's INSANITY Home workouts and this mat was AWESOME to do it on! I live in an apartment complex and it absorbed 90% of jumps this workout entails, then again it is PLYOMETRICS. I've washed it with mat cleaner several times, and tried a sea salt scrub. When I took this mat to class, I couldn't even hold warrior 1 without slipping all over the place. This mat is stable, it doesn't stretch or move beneath you while you are moving through vinyasa. Even without a Mysore rug, you would really have to drop a large amount of sweat for this mat to become too slippery to use.

This is such a solid piece of investment when it comes to practicing yoga at home. I can't even use my old flimsy yoga mats after being spoiled on this one.

If you do yoga on a regular basis this is the mat for you, there is no better. I bought this mat for my brother's birthday (he's currently doing the Insanity workout).

The Manduka Black Mat has met and exceeded all my expectations. I can now perform many more poses that were uncomfortable on my "beginners" mat.

I am looking forward to years of yoga. This size is the best, less weight, thick enough for the POWER 90 and P90X training. My hands don't slip and the mat doesn't move at all. Although pricey, it's well worth the investment if you have more than a passing interest in yoga. I do now have a 14-inch mat section which comes in handy for elbow stands in another part of my apartment. Wash it to air it out some more Firm, good cushioning, very happy so far. I washed it as suggested, with a brush and soap, and let it dry in the sun for 2 days. It still has the slippery film on it, despite all that and using it about 6 times.

Well worth the price. I bought this mat about a year and a half ago and love it! Bottom line, it's got some heft to it but it's not non-transportable, as has been reported in some reviews. I'm all of 5'1" and average weight and didn't find it prohibitively heavy. This mat is TOUGH. I am quite sure that even if I greatly intensify my yoga practice in the near future, this mat will still last a solid ten years or more.

Deceptive And Disappointing - Wide Yoga Mat Critique

I started out using discount store yoga mats. With my frequency of workouts (almost daily), I went through three mats fairly quickly. The size is great -- not so big as to overwhelm the studio, but enough to feel comfortable (I'm 5'10"). My thoughts on several comments I saw in other reviews: Common comment: The surface is slippery when covered in sweat.

With the Manduka, there was an immediate difference. It never bunches up and gets stickier with use.

It doesn't smell either. My hands and feet sweat a lot and this mat holds me in place.

I bought the mat with the matching bag as a set from Amazon.com, and once I slid the movable shoulder pad up to cover the buckle, off I went. As far as slippage is concerned, I experienced some foot slippage the first time I used it but have had no problems since. Despite a claim that it is "non-toxic," I did my research and sure enough, it is made with PVC! PVC is an extremely toxic material used in cars and vinyl shower curtains, among others. Bottom line, it's got some heft to it but it's not non-transportable, as has been reported in some reviews. I'm all of 5'1" and average weight and didn't find it prohibitively heavy. So I decided to buy a better quality mat. Reviews here and elsewhere led me straight to the Manduka BlackMat. This is a luxury mat that is absolutely awesome to use. This mat offers enough cushion for balance security and allows you to relax and actually breathe into poses instead of constant rearranging yourself and hating being in class. My new mat has light grey streaks on it. This is a thick, heavy mat similar to industrial floor matting.

I put my knees into it all the time and it feels just fine. The mat is rolled out over vinyl flooring, so the mat is all the cushion I have.

My knees need a little TLC and they are so much happier since I have been using this mat. I think this is a great option for at home, but it's a little heavy to be carting to classes on public transportation. I really enjoy this mat. It was a little pricey but works very well. Especially if you're sweating - it turns into a skating rink. I use a towel, but even one drop of sweat can do the trick.

In the end I took the plunge, got the sucker in the mail and have never, EVER looked back. It's amazing how a good quality mat can improve your workout and last a lifetime.

I Have To Rate This Lower - Sanuk Yoga Mat Critique

This mat is stable, it doesn't stretch or move beneath you while you are moving through vinyasa. Even without a Mysore rug, you would really have to drop a large amount of sweat for this mat to become too slippery to use. From day one I've had to use a towel under my hands at the front of the mat to keep from collapsing in down dog. I've tried them all, your standard "sticky" mat, a Mysore rug, etc.

I would recommend this mat to anyone looking for a well built, highly functional yoga mat. I love my new Manduka black mat. This mat is more sturdy and thick, thus padding the sensitive bony prominences. It is not slippery, though I wouldn't say it is any better than other mats if you are doing a very sweaty (like sweat dripping off you into puddles) yoga--you still need a towel.

It's worth every penny. I bought this mat as a replacement for a $15 mat I bought from target a long time ago.

However, anybody who purchased this mat must have noticed the extremely strong smell it gives out. It literally stunk up my entire room when I unfolded it. Would recommend this to everyone! At first I was VERY skeptical about spending this much on a yoga mat, when I could pick one up at my local WalMart! I bought this mat because of the raving reviews it typically gets. Granted, it is great from the standpoint of how it performs during practice, durability, etc.

I believe that I will have this mat for a long while. I've searched for the perfect mat for a while now.

It provides good support, even when getting sweaty. The Manduka black mat offers the most secure footing of any mat I have used; the enhanced stability allows one to concentrate on the pose and not on keeping the feet from slipping.

I tried everything I read and heard about trying to "break in" a mat and to make it stop being slippery but nothing worked on this mat! Extremely disappointed I am just glad that I was able to return it and get a refund before I broke or cracked a bone or something! You don't slip, though I do use yoga toes after the first half hour. Although I'm a yoga novice, I wanted a high-quality mat with which to pursue and enjoy the full yoga experience.

This mat protects your toes and spine and knees and hands from the hardness of the floor underneath it. Plus, it will stay in place.

I have no complaints. This is one of the best yoga mats on the market. What a difference, I can totally tell the difference when I'm doing my P90X jumping jacks or other impact exercises, compared to doing them on the bare concrete basement. Easy to clean, very durable and gives quite a bit of cushion when working out, stretch, etc.

Many of the reviews I read before I bought it complain about slipperiness of new Manduka mats, but I haven't had that problem. The very first time I used it, it was less slippery than the moderately priced mats (Gaiam, etc.) I've always used. The mat does not stretch and give in poses like the warrior poses, and it stays in place. The dense cushioning protects knees and hands but is not so soft that it interferes with balance.

I would recommend this mat to anyone who is serious about yoga practice. This is a great mat for doing yoga. This is the best yoga mat that you could ever buy and is well worth the money. I've tried many, and none give the traction, support and cushioning that you will get with the Manduka Pro. Keep in mind too that after scrubbing a product, what if you realize you want to return it" Buy this mat only if you plan to buy a towel to put over it (to avoid slipping) and are ok with spending the $ on what you could have for much less. Now that I have actually gotten used to this mat, I will never use anything else ever again. I purchased this mat because a friend in my yoga class recommended it and the reviews were great. My other mats moved around. I did slide on the mat the first time I used it in my yoga class so I scrubbed it with distilled vinegar and water, hosed it down and let it dry outside. If I had a longer commute to my yoga class, I would have probably gotten the Pro-Lite which is 3 pounds lighter and just an inch shorter on the side. The best part, my feet and knees are very happy!

If you're just starting yoga, start with a regular mat, but if you're committed, you'll want this product. Best yoga mat I've found on the market.

I would recommend it in a second for any serious or professional yogi. It's a great mat, solid, stable, but didn't fit my needs. My knees need a little TLC and they are so much happier since I have been using this mat. I think this is a great option for at home, but it's a little heavy to be carting to classes on public transportation.

Really felt secure in going into some of the poses; surprising how one subtly holds themselves back when the feeling of traction is missing. A little bit longer of a mat (for the price) would have been nice.

It's too heavy and bulky for lugging back and forth to classes. Keep this one at home, and bring the lighter weight one for yoga class. Get this mat and you won't be disappointed. After ten years of yoga practice and ten different mats, I have finally found my last mat.

Yoga is a meditative discipline originating in India that combines the spiritual, physical and mental processes to reach a state of peace and spiritual enlightenment. No doubt, you may have seen or heard of a few of the common yoga postures like the downward dog, the lotus, or the frog; but trying them is altogether different. It takes great flexibility, concentration and discipline to master any yoga routine, and there is another missing element that could help you along the way: heat.

When you started to do the basics of yoga, you had no problems trying to do all the yoga postures, and were are so drawn to them daily. But as the days passed by, you've noticed that you do not have enough time to do your daily yoga program anymore. Your schedule became so hectic that you have to jump out of bed in the morning to get the children to school or to meet clients for the sale you want to close. Thus, after a long stressful condition, the body began manifesting less enthusiasm. You started feeling sorry because you cannot do your yoga and the feeling of self-neglect moved in.

Hot yoga is a derivative of yoga that is performed in hot and humid conditions. It is done to capture the warm climates associated with India, the birthplace of yoga. There are four types of hot yoga: 1) Bikram Yoga, 2) TriBalance Yoga, 3) Forrest Yoga and 4) Power Yoga. Bikram is the most popular of the group. Bikram Yoga was conceptualized in India by Bikram Choudhury in 1946, but wasn't introduced to the United States until the 1970s. Bikram Yoga includes 26 signature exercises and 2 breathing routines in a 90-minute session.

A typical hot yoga setting lasts up to two hours long, and the temperature inside the room is about 105 degrees Fahrenheit with 40% humidity. You could imagine how hot it can get in those conditions, while moving, stretching, straining and sweating the whole time. The humidity and moisture created in the atmosphere is meant to encourage deeper, clearer breathing, smoother blood flow, and detoxification.

Hot yoga instructors encourage participants to refrain from eating two hours prior to class, to wear loose-fitting clothing for easy movement and to bring a towel, mat and plenty of drinking water to rehydrate after all of the water loss that occurs from so much perspiration. Hot yoga participants have been known to overheat causing dizziness, nausea and fainting spells.

A) Lie on back with both arms at your side, move one leg to the other side and grab the big toe with your other hand. Feel that good stretch on your back and hamstrings. Bend your knees if needed. Hold for about 18 to 30 counts. Now, do it on the other side. B) Still on your back, bend your knees and hold your ankles. Now raise your buttocks. Hold for 18-30 counts. C) Now turn on your stomach, hands by the sides of the chest. Push yourself up and press the hips on the bed. Hold 18-30 counts. D) At this point, you now have the energy to sit on the bed. Open both legs wide to bend on one leg. Hold again for 18-30 counts. Then do it on the other side. E) Now, while seated, you can do the spinal twist; 18-30 counts on each side. F) Then do your stretching on one leg on the side while you keep that other leg bent and heel near your groin. Execute this on an exhale; start bending from your hips and hold for 30 counts. Do this on the other side. G) If you still have time, make one or two rounds of Sun Salutation. H) Now lie on your back for 2-3 minutes. Consciously relax each part of your body.

Today, the basic term is hot yoga, which sums up all yoga routines that are done in a hot and humid setting. Hot yoga is very popular among Koreans and has become increasingly popular in the United States as a peaceful spiritual practice as well as an exercise routine to build strength and flexibility.
